Rich in forests and lakes, the region has a long tradition of hunting and fishing. This recreational activity can today be enjoyed in a great number of ways, at outfitters, in Z.E.C.s (Wildlife management areas), on wildlife reserves and on public lands. Special permits are required and many packages are also available.

Species to be found in the region include:
Game: moose, deer, bear and small game
Fish: trout, walleye, bass, pike, perch
Outfitters
There are two types of outfitters, those with exclusive rights and those without. With exclusive rights, the owner also manages fauna levels for the ministère de l'Environnement et de la Faune. Outfitter guests are the only ones allowed access to the area. Outfitters without exclusive rights have no land to manage. However, they are located in areas ideal for outdoor activities, hunting and fishing.
Many outfitters are also open in the wintertime for snowmobilers and nature lovers.
Z.E.C. (Wildlife management areas)
Another important part of our area are Z.E.C.s.. In Z.E.C.s, there are no accommodations per se but numerous rustic camp sites are available. Users must either be a member of the z.e.c. or pay an admission fee for the day. There are six z.e.c.s in the area including Maison-de-Pierre, La Mazana, Normandie, Mitchinamécus, Le Sueur and Petawaga.
Wildlife reserves
There are two excellent reserves in the Upper Laurentians: Rouge-Matawin and Papineau-Labelle. Both are managed by SEPAQ (Société des établissements plein air du Québec).
Pond fishing
If you're looking for a fun family activity that doesn't require equipment, then pond fishing is a great idea.
